Biography

James aims to create the most artistic greeting cards ever…like in the whole-wide-world.
Every single piece is designed, folded, and written by hand.
With keen attention to detail, James taught himself the skills necessary for converting paper into miniature art. He studied the techniques of a master book binder in San Francisco and was inspired by Japanese Kozo paper collections patterned after kimono fabric. The styling of his boxes reflects the “Prairie” school of architecture. James has refined his artisanship over three decades.
Materials are hand-made: The multi-layered silkscreened papers are created through an ancient process unique to central Japan, where mulberry trees are grown to provide the Kozo fibers woven into the paper. The card stock is Italian, sourced from a generational family-owned paper mill. The wooden boxes are finished by hand and fitted with intricate interiors of Kozo paper. Fine ribbons, waxed linen, copper, and mother-of-pearl buttons are motifs of the collections.
Each card is beautiful to the touch and unfolds to reveal a special inscription.
Materials are archival and will maintain a clean and clear appearance as they become heirlooms.
James’ wall-mounted collage art incorporates Kozo papers as well as found objects that have their own stories to tell.
Private commissions and custom requests are welcomed.
Being an artist is a joy, and James hopes to pass along joy with his unique greeting cards: Happiness Abounds.
